The Co-op is planning to sell its Funeralcare building - the former Gaumont cinema - to a developer who will knock it down and build expensive apartments. This is an inappropriate development for the centre of Chorlton and will mean losing a part of our heritage - the place where the Bee Gees first performed.
We're supporting the Stayin Alive community-led bid by the Chorlton Community Land Trust to buy the building and turn it into a fabulous shared space for the community.
The plan will create an open market for local traders and 'pop-up' eating space. It will create much-needed new premises for the Chorlton Family Practice. And the whole site will be a tribute to the Bee Gees.
We want the Co-op to help the Stayin Alive community bid by doing three simple things:

The Stayin Alive campaign has launched an initial call for pledges running until 8 November.
The aim is to discover and demonstrate how much support there is. No money will be taken. Instead, supporters are asked to say how much they would be prepared to invest or give to the campaign.
Please pledge now!
Staff at the 479 Barlow Moor Road Co-op store (the 'Bus Station' Co-op), have been told that the store will close. A show of solidarity with the staff attracted over 30 people in the rain on Saturday 26 October.
We'll be discussing the closure at our next meeting on 23rd November (see below).

Hardy Lane Co-op Rooms, above the Co-op, 349 Barlow Moor Road, M21 7QH
We'll be discussing:
All our meetings last just one hour. We focus on what we can do to make the Co-op work better for members and the community and how we can work with other co-ops.
We're Chorlton and District Co-ops - local Co-op members making our voice heard in the Co-op and working with other co-ops in the community. We hold short informal meetings every two months and we organise local activity around issues like Fairtrade. The Co-op recently made a short film about us for people interested in forming groups like ours in other areas. We recently changed our name (again!) from the Chorlton Co-op Cluster.
Anyone who is interested in co-ops and co-operation is welcome to join us.
