Here's a quick update from Chorlton and District Co-ops (formerly Chorlton Co-op Cluster) - organised by and for local co-ops and co-op members.
Next meeting
The next meeting of Chorlton and District Co-ops (the Cluster) will be:
10:30am 21st March 2020
Hardy Lane Co-op rooms, 349 Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton-cum-hardy, M21 7QH
Agenda:
Coronavirus
Given current government advice there's no reason not to go ahead with our meeting on the 21st. It's only a small and local meeting. If the advice changes then we'll let you know.
Stayin' Alive
At our January meeting we heard how the Co-op management have accepted the offer from the Chorlton Community Land Trust to buy the Co-op Funeralcare building - site of the old Picture House where the Bee Gees first played - and turn it into a mixed-use asset for the community. The Co-op has given six months for a proper bid to be put together.
We congratulate the Co-op board for responding to local members by giving the community-led bid a real chance. This meant accepting a significantly lower offer.
Now the Community Land Trust is working hard on developing the plans.
Come along to our meeting to hear more.
Greater Manchester Cooperative Commission
The Cooperative Commission set up by Andy Burnham has published its report. The mayor created the commission to advise on how to make Greater Manchester the most co-operative place in the UK. The report makes 42 recommendations which the mayor has said he will implement in full.
Chorlton and District Coops provided evidence to the report, which has a strong focus on cooperation in communities. Now we have a chance to influence the commission and Greater Manchester Combined Authority on how to turn that into reality, drawing on our experience working on issues like crime, the Funeralcare site and electric vehicle charging
You can download the report here.
We're Chorlton and District Co-ops - local Co-op members making our voice heard in the Co-op and working with other co-ops in the community. We hold short informal meetings every two months and we organise local activity around issues like Fairtrade. We recently changed our name (again!) from the Chorlton Co-op Cluster.
Anyone who is interested in co-ops and co-operation is welcome to join us.
@chorltoncoops
Chorlton and District Coops is organised by a group of concerned members of the Co-op. We aim to promote collaboration between members, Co-op stores and other cooperatives in Chorlton.
